Nothing is more challenging than packing something neatly, cleanly and efficiently into a bag or box. The art of packing, repacking and repackaging is a skill our colleagues from production have mastered like no other. But they don’t do it all by hand, of course. We use the latest machines from state-of-the-art machine builders. Our ‘oldest’ machine is as recent as 2019. Properly packing fruit and vegetables is the icing on the cake. It not only protects the products but also makes them more appealing and recognisable for the consumer.
Our products contribute to a healthy lifestyle. We give Delhaize customers the opportunity to make a responsible choice for delicious fruits and vegetables. A juicy kiwi as a quick snack, lovely tomatoes as the basis for a yummy pasta sauce and mango for a tropical smoothie. The shelves are stocked with fruit and vegetables from our growers!
Together, Bakker and Delhaize ensure that throughout the chain, from grower to shelf, all that produce is always transported, processed and stored under the correct temperature. That is why we have two different temperature zones in our production environment: the ‘hot’ zone, where the temperature is a constant 12-14°C, and the ‘cold’ zone, where the temperature fluctuates between 2-4°C.
A healthy lifestyle goes hand in hand with a sustainable approach to our planet’s resources. That is why Bakker casts a critical eye on its packagings. Is it even necessary to pack a product? And if so, how can we keep packaging to a minimum? We use the most sustainable materials, such as biologically degradable or recyclable materials. It is a creative process in which our packaging experts are constantly in search of the latest environmentally friendly packagings. Where possible we deliver products without packaging, such as bulk products in crates that can be placed directly on the supermarket shelves.
If their skin permits it, we try to laser our biologically grown products as often as possible. Take our pumpkins: a bio label is lasered onto the skin, eliminating the need for packaging or a plastic label. These efforts continually reduce our environmental footprint, which ranks high on our and Delhaize’s list of priorities.
