A keen nose, sharp vision and an eye for detail. These are the skills our inspectors bring to bear to provide our customer with the most delicious produce! They bring great passion to their work, they are on their feet all day long and alternately work in hot and cold environments. They scrutinise our products with eagle eyes. In consultation with our customer we have determined the specifications that our growers’ products must meet. Our inspectors work with these requirements every day. This means performing random checks in cold storage rooms, such as monitoring the correct quality parameters and signalling any deviations. We are strict and as a result it does happen that a delivery is rejected. After all, Bakker settles for nothing less than top quality! Incidentally, rejection doesn’t mean the product is discarded. Often there are other applications, such as processing in other products or offering them elsewhere, such as to food banks.
In our lab the quality team conducts a variety of tests. They use a database to be able to measure and assess product quality throughout the year. They test our products on shelf life, hardness and taste. That’s the fun part of their job: they get to sample all that deliciousness on a regular basis! We have special taste teams consisting of colleagues from different departments within Bakker Belgium and Delhaize. Thanks to routine testing we can respond quickly if quality is subpar. Our lab results present us with a neutral basis for discussion with our suppliers. This is how we work together to achieve the best quality. Our tests unburden Delhaize and ensure that only the best and yummiest fruit and vegetables make it onto the shelves.
